“Why should I care?” is an innovative, web-based AI tool from WDR that makes political decisions tangible.
It analyzes laws, explains how they affect people's lives, and provides answers to individual questions – in a way that is understandable, interactive, and optimized for smartphones.
The application initially covers three current reforms:
In addition, the tool explains the legislative process in Germany, contains a glossary of key terms, and conveys various political perspectives from the social discourse.
Artificial intelligence is used at several levels in “Why should I care?”.
It enables both dialogue-based interaction—via chat or voice control—and automated analysis of large amounts of data and documents.
AI helps to structure and prepare complex legal texts and political contexts and translate them into understandable language.
Users can engage in direct dialogue with the application, ask their own questions, and also send suggestions to the editorial team.
Artificial intelligence thus not only supports the transfer of information, but also contributes to accessibility and inclusion.
All content is checked, supplemented, and editorially approved by the WDR editorial team, ensuring that the use of AI remains transparent, traceable, and journalistically responsible.
""With this project, WDR is demonstrating how innovation can have a tangible impact on the audience. We are engaging in dialogue in a modern way, and the AI in our tool meets our standards for reliability. Because the editorial review of the published content allows us to say: The content is correct.""
– Jörg Schönenborn, Program Director, WDR
The project was conceived as a progressive web experience that combines modern AI technology with clear user guidance.
The interface is deliberately minimalistic and optimized for mobile devices—for fast access, intuitive operation, and maximum comprehensibility.
Technologically, the application is based on Vue.js, a modular AI backend, and API-supported data pipelines that link research, AI processing, and editorial control.
“Why should I care?” makes politics understandable and relevant – and shows how artificial intelligence, design, and editing can work together to create new forms of knowledge transfer.
The project is an example of the responsible use of AI in journalism: automated analysis meets editorial quality assurance.
The result is a barrier-free, dialogue-oriented, and credible source of information—a digital format for the political education of the future.
